What size sample do I need to bring in for testing, and what paperwork do you require?
The sample size depends on the material and reason for the testing. Simtec Materials Testing can offer advice once the nature of the tests required. The more information that is supplied, for example, client, site name, date sampled, material type, specification etc., the more accurately Simtec can advise. A purchase order is usually required at this stage.
What notice do I need to give for a technician to attend site?
Usually, a week to guarantee a slot, although work can also be done around client needs including last minute requests.
How quickly can you turn around laboratory tests, as my client won’t pay me until I’ve sent these across to them?
Simtec’s standard turnaround on laboratory samples is ten working days, but in most cases, an express service can be provided to suit client needs. These are generally five, three, and one-day services as appropriate. Some tests take longer than others. Adherence to the standards means the timescale cannot be shortened.
We need to create a new entrance to our new development, and the Local Authority has instructed us to take cores from the existing road for visual assessment. Can you provide this service with the appropriate traffic management and all relevant permits?
Yes. SImtec can extract the cores and are UKAS accredited for photographic core logs in accordance with BS EN 12697:36. Also providing traffic management and application for the required road space booking and section 171 licence.
How are sample concrete cubes tested for compression load strength?
Concrete cube samples are tested in a calibrated hydraulic compression machine until they fail. The resultant crushing strength can be compared to the designed strength of the concrete.
How many sample moulds are needed for testing freshly mixed concrete?
A set of six cubes are made in accordance with BS EN 1881-108 or its replacement BS EN 12390-2.

Do weather conditions affect testing?
Weather does not adversely affect testing. However, rain over a prolonged period will distort CBR values. Avoid testing when the surface is frozen, affected by frost and snow or saturated.
What is the turnaround time for test reports for site testing?
If no laboratory samples are taken from site, Simtec aim to get your reports to you within 48 hours. Preliminary results can usually be given after the test is complete to give you an idea of compliance.
What notice do I need to give to cancel a booking?
If you can give us more than 16 hours’ notice of cancellation, you will not incur a charge, but of course, as much notice as possible is much appreciated.
Do you provide data in AGS format?
Yes, we have the capability to provide data in AGS 4.0.4 (Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists) format.
